Configuring a ConvertKit Zap with Zapier

IMPORTANT: If you've yet to add the Doki application to Zapier, please follow the instructions provided in  Working with Zapier then return to this page to learn how to use ConvertKit with Doki's Zapier app.

Log into your Zapier account and click the "MAKE A ZAP!" button at the top of the page.

Start by selecting/finding Doki in the "Choose a Trigger App" step. If you already connected your Doki account, it will appear under the "YOUR APPS" heading. Otherwise type in "Doki" in the "Search hundreds of apps..." field to find it and select it by clicking it.

If you haven't connected your Doki account to Zapier yet, check out the  Working with Zapier article before proceeding.

Next, choose the trigger you'd like to respond to. For this demo we'll select the "New Student" trigger which fires when a student is added to one of your programs. For documentation on what triggers the Doki app supports, please read the  Triggers section in the Working with Zapier guide.

The next step involves selecting a course and a package from Doki. When a user buys or is added to a course via a package, Doki will send that information to Zapier so it can be funneled to other systems. Select the course from the "Course" dropdown. Once you've chosen the course, you can then choose a package from the "Package" dropdown.

Click the "Continue" button to continue. Test the connection by clicking "Fetch & Continue". Don't worry about the "Make sure you have at least one recent student created" message if you have no students yet. Doki supplies sample data in the case that you don't have any yet. Click "Continue" to proceed to the "Action".

We'll connect a ConvertKit account for this demo. Select ConvertKit from the list of apps. If you've yet to connect ConvertKit to Zapier, you'll need to plug in your API Key and API Secret to complete the connection. Follow the "Account page" link on the access page to find the codes you need to paste into these fields then click "Yes, continue." If you've already connected ConvertKit you can test that it's still working and continue on to the next step.

We're going to take information about the user that signed up on Doki and funnel it into ConvertKit via Zapier. ConvertKit offers a few different actions we can perform when Doki sends it a "new student" event. You can add subscribers to forms, tags or sequences. We'll do a sequence for this demo, so select "Add Subscriber to a Sequence" and click "Save & Continue".

Next up, we need to pass the information that Doki is sending to Zapier on to ConvertKit. From the template, we're going to select the Sequence we want the Doki student to be added to. Then click the button next to the email field and select "Email Address" as the piece of data you want to be sent on to ConvertKit. You can also do the same for the "First Name" field by selecting "First Name" from the Doki data.

Finally, give your Zap a name and click the toggle button to activate it. This will subscribe to Doki and now any time a new user is added to your Doki account, this zap will be triggered and new leads will be captured in ConvertKit as they do.

Let's recap what's happening in this Zap:

  1. A customer of yours buys access to a course via a package on Doki.
  2. At purchase time we capture the user's email address.
  3. Once they confirm their account and add their First and Last Name we then send the following information to Zapier:
    1. Email Address
    2. First Name
    3. Last Name
  4. The "New Student" trigger is fired in Zapier and any zaps listening to that are triggered.
  5. Since we have a ConvertKit zap listening for that hook, it will send ConvertKit a request to subscribe the user to the Sequence we selected in the "Action" step, sending through the email address and first name.
